Bluesky's Attie App Empowers Users to Build Custom AI Feeds

Bluesky, the decentralized social networking platform, is making a strategic leap into artificial intelligence with the introduction of Attie. This new standalone AI assistant empowers users to craft personalized algorithmic feeds and, eventually, to "vibe-code" their own applications. Unveiled at the Atmosphere conference, Attie utilizes Anthropic’s Claude AI to offer an agentic social experience built on Bluesky’s underlying AT Protocol (atproto).

Attie, distinct from the primary Bluesky social app, represents the first product from a new team led by former CEO Jay Graber, now Chief Innovation Officer. Interim CEO Toni Schneider emphasized that this initiative is a direct response to Graber’s desire to return to building products, freeing her from operational duties. The app aims to shift the power of AI from platforms to people, allowing individuals to control their content consumption without needing to write code.

Designing Your Own Algorithm

Users can access Attie by signing in with their atproto login, such as their Bluesky credentials. The app intelligently understands user preferences and past interactions by leveraging the open data sharing inherent in the atproto ecosystem. Through natural language commands, similar to interacting with a standard AI chatbot, users can ask Attie to curate custom feeds based on their interests or even suggest posts they might like to see or repost.

The immediate utility of Attie lies in its ability to build and display these personalized feeds, which will then be accessible within the Bluesky app or any other atproto-compatible application. Looking ahead, Bluesky envisions Attie enabling users to design entire social apps and develop tools for a broader community, further decentralizing the social media landscape.

Strategic Vision and Financial Backing

Graber articulated the core philosophy behind Attie: "We think AI should serve people, not platforms." She highlighted that traditional platforms often use AI to serve their own interests, such as increasing engagement and data harvesting. Attie, by contrast, is designed to give users direct control over their digital experience, allowing them to "find signal in the noise" of information.

This innovative step follows Bluesky’s recent announcement of securing $100 million in Series B funding, which closed last year. This substantial investment provides the company with over three years of financial runway, signaling stability for Bluesky and its burgeoning ecosystem. Schneider confirmed that despite backing from some crypto investors, Bluesky has no plans for crypto integration, focusing instead on decentralization principles that align with the investors' interests.

Monetization and Ecosystem Growth

With newfound stability, Bluesky is poised to address key challenges, including implementing advanced privacy controls within the protocol and exploring monetization strategies. While Attie is currently in private beta, future considerations for revenue include potential fees, subscriptions, or hosting services for communities built on the protocol.

Schneider drew parallels between the AT Protocol ecosystem and the success of WordPress.com, where he previously served as CEO of Automattic. He noted that WordPress, an open and decentralized system, has fostered a massive ecosystem generating billions annually. Bluesky aims for a similar trajectory, creating an "Atmosphere" where diverse apps and services can coexist, collaborate, and thrive.

FAQ

Q: What is Attie and what does it do? A: Attie is a new AI-powered app from Bluesky that allows users to create personalized social feeds and, in the future, build their own social apps using natural language commands. It leverages Anthropic’s Claude AI and runs on Bluesky's AT Protocol to give users more control over their content.

Q: Is Attie part of the main Bluesky app? A: No, Attie is a standalone product built by a new team led by Bluesky's Chief Innovation Officer, Jay Graber. While it integrates with the AT Protocol, it is separate from the primary Bluesky social network application.

Q: How does Bluesky plan to monetize Attie or its ecosystem? A: While Attie is currently in private beta and its pricing is undecided, Bluesky is exploring several monetization avenues. These include potential fees for Attie, subscriptions, and offering hosting services for communities that want to build on the AT Protocol.
