Maul's Shadow Lord Trailer Unleashes 3 Wild New Details

Star Wars fans, prepare yourselves! The era of Darth Maul is truly upon us, and with the latest trailer for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, our anticipation has hit hyperspeed. This brand-new animated series from Lucasfilm Animation is poised to dive deep into one of the galaxy's most compelling villains, launching exclusively on Disney Plus on April 6. We already knew the show would focus on Maul’s relentless quest to rebuild his criminal empire on the mysterious planet Janix, but this new footage has blown the doors wide open, revealing some truly wild details that have us speculating like crazy about what’s to come.

A New Apprentice, a Reptilian Friend, and the Rule of Two

The trailer kicks off with Maul, ever the eloquent manipulator, lamenting the Empire's betrayal and declaring his need for a weapon to fight back. His gaze, however, isn't on a blaster or a lightsaber, but on Devon Izara, a young Twi’lek Jedi in hiding. Like countless others after Order 66, Devon is on the run, a prime target for Maul's machinations. "Together we can destroy the Empire," Maul proposes, a tempting offer for any Jedi left without hope. But not everyone is buying it. We then see Devon conferring with her incredibly cool reptilian companion – also a Jedi – who is quick to point out that while the Empire may be a shared enemy, Maul will "never" be an ally.

This immediately raises some fascinating questions. For years, fans have speculated if Devon might be Disney’s answer to Darth Talon, a formidable character from the now-Legends Extended Universe who served as Maul's apprentice. If Maul: Shadow Lord is indeed setting Devon up as his next potential disciple, it throws a major wrench into her story arc given Maul's later attempts to groom Ezra Bridger in Star Wars: Rebels. Does this mean Devon won’t be in the picture years down the line? And here's the kicker: Maul, despite his hatred for the Empire, still adheres to the fundamental Sith teaching of the Rule of Two. If he's truly gunning for Devon to be his apprentice, what does that mean for her reptilian Jedi friend? We're holding out hope for this nameless, scaly Force-user, because a reptilian Jedi is just too awesome a concept to be unceremoniously taken out of the picture. This storyline promises both incredible potential and heartbreaking stakes.

Inquisitors Resurrected for a Shadowy Hunt

Speaking of intriguing characters, the trailer gave us glimpses of two Inquisitors, one of whom fans will instantly recognize. The Eleventh Brother, the crow-like Inquisitor who famously fell at Ahsoka Tano's hands in Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi's "Resolve," makes an appearance. But as is often the case in Star Wars, death is merely a setback, and he's since popped up again in Star Wars: Tales of the Empire. Joining him is Marrok, another Inquisitor who, like the Eleventh Brother, met a terrible end at Ahsoka Tano's hands. However, Marrok's story is a bit different; he managed to survive past the Empire's fall, setting him up to be a persistent and nasty thorn in Maul's side throughout this animated adventure.

The true identities of both the Eleventh Brother and Marrok remain shrouded in mystery. Given that Maul: Shadow Lord takes place shortly after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, and both Inquisitors are widely believed to be former members of the Jedi Order, this series presents a golden opportunity. Could Shadow Lord finally reveal some key details about who they were before they turned to the dark side? The trailer also hints at Marrok coming into direct conflict with Captain Brander Lawson, a disgruntled cop on Janix who has his own motivations for apprehending Maul. With Maul trying to build an empire and Inquisitors hunting down stray Jedi (and likely Maul himself), Janix is shaping up to be a volatile hotbed of galactic intrigue.

A Dathomirian Homecoming and Brothers in Arms

Maul isn’t just looking to unite disparate criminals; it appears he’s also reconnecting with his own kind. The trailer briefly showcases a group of Zabrak warriors, armed with rocket launchers and blasters, unleashing hell upon Imperial forces. While these could simply be local Zabrak criminals Maul has conscripted on Janix, there's a much more tantalizing possibility: these could be Nightbrothers.

For those unfamiliar, Nightbrothers are the male Zabrak warriors who lived under the oppressive rule of the Nightsister clans on Dathomir. Maul himself grew up as a Nightbrother under Mother Talzin, so he intimately understands the poor treatment and subjugation they endured. With the Nightsisters nearly wiped out, only a scattered few Nightbrothers and Nightsisters remain. We know that Maul eventually revisits Dathomir during the Imperial era, though the exact timing has always been a bit vague. If Maul: Shadow Lord sees him making a detour to Dathomir between his escapades on Janix, these Nightbrothers could become the formidable forces he desperately needs to help establish and expand his burgeoning criminal empire. This reunion would not only be a powerful character moment for Maul but also a strategic masterstroke, giving him loyal, battle-hardened warriors who share a history of being exploited.

What's Next for the Shadow Lord?

The latest trailer for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord isn't just a sizzle reel; it's a tantalizing peek into a period of Star Wars history that's ripe for exploration. From the potential for new apprentices and the ethical dilemmas of the Rule of Two, to the re-contextualization of fan-favorite Inquisitors and a possible Dathomirian reunion, this series promises to deepen our understanding of one of the saga's most enduring figures. With its intricate character work and high-stakes narrative, Maul: Shadow Lord looks set to be a must-watch for any Star Wars enthusiast. Get ready to dive into the shadows when it streams exclusively on Disney Plus on April 6.
