in-depth: 12 Best White Elephant Gifts, Plus a Prank Box to Put Them

Wired’s gear expert, Nena Farrell, has released her definitive guide to winning your next white elephant gift exchange, updated for October 2026. As the holiday season approaches and invitations for these notoriously challenging parties begin to surface, finding a gift that stands out, fits the budget, and is genuinely desired by a diverse group can feel like a formidable task. This year's top picks range from novelty tech items to cozy home essentials, meticulously chosen to ensure your present is the one everyone wants to steal.

The tradition of white elephant parties, whether for family, friends, or colleagues, often adds a unique layer of stress to holiday shopping. The goal isn't just to give a gift, but to select an item that sparks intrigue and competition, avoiding the dreaded fate of an unwanted re-gift. Farrell’s recommendations aim to simplify this complex endeavor, highlighting gifts that blend humor, utility, and desirability.

Among the standout selections, several categories emerge as crowd-pleasers. For the growing number of Dungeons & Dragons enthusiasts, Lego’s D&D Collectible Mini Figures offer a delightful mystery. Priced at $13 on Amazon, these blind bags promise a fun discovery for the lucky recipient, tapping into the mainstream appeal of tabletop gaming culture.

Tech-savvy readers will appreciate the inclusion of Cool E-Reader Cases from PopSockets. Specifically designed for Kindle Paperwhite models, these $40 cases, available in "Dragon Sterling" from PopSockets or "Aura" on Amazon, combine style with practicality. They feature a built-in MagSafe ring for attaching PopSocket Grips, enhancing reading comfort. For Kobo users, SleepCover cases are also suggested at $40, though a gift receipt is recommended to ensure the correct fit.

Beyond personal tech, the guide also champions quirky yet practical home items. The Funwares Cupa Joe, a mug cleverly shaped like a miniature coffee pot, offers a charming way to enjoy hot beverages. Available for $25 on Amazon (a 17% discount from its original $30) or Barnes & Noble, its comfortable handle and included (albeit flimsy) plastic lid make it a safe, universally appealing choice for any coffee or tea lover. Similarly, a set of Sushi Fridge Magnets, priced at $17 on Amazon, provides a delightful and surprisingly realistic aesthetic. These magnets are not just cute conversation starters but are robust enough to secure notes and artwork to any fridge, sparking cravings with their lifelike appearance.

For those looking to add a touch of humor to their workspace, the Nummove Big Enter Supersized Key is an ideal pick. Connecting to a computer via USB, this $16 Amazon item functions as an oversized, responsive "Enter" button. It’s presented as a fun, stress-relieving gadget perfect for remote workers or office environments, offering a subtle, playful passive-aggressive outlet during long workdays.

Comfort and coziness are also high on the list. The Diaspora Spice Co.’s Cozy Beverages Gift Set, reduced to $37 from $39, is highlighted as a luxurious treat for tea aficionados. Featuring Masala Chai and Madhur Jaggery, and hinting at a Golden Milk blend, this set provides a gourmet at-home experience perfect for colder months, proving a delicious and well-priced option within typical white elephant budgets.

Creative types will appreciate the Galison Liberty Paint by Number Kit Thorpe. At $26 from Barnes & Noble or Galison, this stylish kit offers hours of engaging activity, complete with 12 paint colors and three brushes. It’s presented as a refreshing alternative to traditional puzzles, appealing to hobbyists seeking a mindful, artistic escape.

Adding a playful twist to everyday items, Puffin Drinkwear's Cool Drink Cozies transform ordinary cans and bottles into miniature fashion statements. With styles like "The Fleece" ($20), "The Alpine" ($25), and "The Resort" ($25), these cozies mimic popular outerwear, adding character to beverages. The "spa robe" style is particularly noted for its potential to elegantly wrap a bottle of wine, making it a versatile and amusing gift.

Social gatherings are made more entertaining with Chronicle Books’ Listography: The Game. This $26 game, available at Amazon and Walmart, is designed for three to six players but can scale up to ten, tasking participants with creating lists based on various prompts. It's lauded for its ability to foster engaging discussions and competitive fun, even without the traditional board.

Finally, a set of Joeyan Iridescent Drinking Glasses, priced at $25 on Amazon, offers a touch of vintage elegance. These charming glasses are versatile for cocktails or everyday use, making a visually appealing and coveted item, with the added suggestion of pairing them with a fun bottle of liquor for an even more desirable package.

This diverse selection underscores a trend towards gifts that offer both novelty and genuine utility, catering to various interests from tech and gaming to culinary arts and creative hobbies. Farrell’s curated list reflects a shift away from purely gag gifts, instead favoring items that, while often whimsical, provide lasting enjoyment or practical application. The emphasis on items like cozy beverage sets and stylish glassware also speaks to a continued focus on home comfort and elevated everyday experiences.

As holiday party invitations stack up, this 2026 guide provides a strategic advantage for those navigating the white elephant exchange. By choosing from these thoughtfully selected items, gift-givers can confidently present a desirable and memorable offering, ensuring their contribution is not only coveted but also brings a touch of joy and innovation to the festivities.
